慰めと絶望、わたしのふたりの恋人は
二つの精霊のようにいつもわたしを誘惑するのです
善良な天使はこの上なく美しい男性であり
邪悪な精霊は厚化粧した女性です、
わたしをすぐにでも地獄へと突き落そうとして わたしの女性の悪魔は
わたしの善良な天使をわたしのベッドから誘い出そうとし
その淫らな驕慢さでわたしの清らかな聖者を陥れて
悪魔にしようとするのです、
それでもわたしの天使が悪魔になるかどうかは定かではないので
それをはっきりと告げることは差し控えます
とはいえ二人はわたしから離れて互いに親しくなるでしょう
片方の天使はもう一方の天使の地獄に誘い込まれるのだと思います、
でもわたしはそのことを知る由もないので 疑いつつ生きていくでしょう
わたしの邪悪な天使がわたしの善良な天使を追い出すまでは。

Two loves I have of comfort and despair,
Which like two spirits do suggest me still:
The better angel is a man right fair,
The worser spirit a woman coloured ill.
To win me soon to hell, my female evil,
Tempteth my better angel from my side,
And would corrupt my saint to be a devil,
Wooing his purity with her foul pride.
And whether that my angel be turned fiend,
Suspect I may, yet not directly tell;
But being both from me, both to each friend,
I guess one angel in another's hell:
Yet this shall I ne'er know, but live in doubt,
