わたしの恋人が自分は本当のことしか言わないと誓う時
わたしは彼女が嘘をついているとわかっていてもその言葉を信じる
彼女がわたしを世間のまやかしの機微を悟っていない
世慣れない若造だと思えるように、
彼女がわたしの絶頂期は過ぎたと知っていても
彼女がわたしを若いと思っているとそんなふうにわたしは虚栄心から思い
ただただ彼女の嘘つきの舌を信用する
どちらからもそのように明らかな真実が隠される
だがなぜ彼女は自分が不誠実だと言わないのだろう？
そしてなぜわたしは自分が老いていると言わないのだろう？
おお！愛の最善の特質は信じるふりをすることにあり
恋する年配者は年齢には触れられたくはない、
だからわたしは彼女に嘘をつき 彼女もわたしに嘘をつく
そして嘘という過ちによってわたしたちはいい気分でいられる。
