わたしたちの食欲をさらに旺盛にするために
わたしたちがわたしたちの味覚を強い薬で刺激するように
将来罹るかもしれない病気を予防するために
わたしたちが今病気になることで将来吐き気を催さないようにするように、
わたしはあなたの決して過剰ではない甘さに満たされていた一方
苦い味付けの料理にも食指を伸ばしました
そしてあなたに愛される幸せに飽きてしまって 本当にそれが必要になる前に
薬によって気分が悪くなることの都合のよさに気づいたのでした、
このように愛の打算は まだ現実のものではない苦しみを防止しようとして
疑いようもない過ちを犯したのでした
そして優しさに恵まれ過ぎているのでかえって病気によって癒されるであろう
健康な状態に一連の薬を与えたのでした、
だがわたしはそのことから そんなにもあなたに飽きてしまった者に
薬物が毒として作用するという教訓が真実であると学び知ったのです。

Thus policy in love, to anticipate
The ills that were not, grew to faults assured,
And brought to medicine a healthful state
Which, rank of goodness, would by ill be cured;
But thence I learn and find the lesson true,
Drugs poison him that so fell sick of you.
