ああ！わが詩神はなんと貧しい詩しか生み出さないのでしょうか、
その詩才を存分に発揮し得る広範なテーマがあるというのに、
わたしが付け加える称賛の言葉などないほうが
詩の対象はより価値あるものとなるのです！
おお！わたしがもはや詩作しえないとしても責めないでください、
恋人よ、鏡をご覧ください、そこには
わたしの粗末な詩想をはるかに凌駕し、わたしの詩句を凡庸にし、
わたしの顔色をなからしめるあなたのお顔が映っています、
それゆえ、あなたのお顔をより美しく表現しようとして かえって
元から美しいお顔を損なうことがあるとすれば罪悪だと言えるでしょう？
なぜならわたしが詩作において目指しているのは
あなたの優美さや才能について述べることだからです、
あなたが鏡を見る時、鏡はあなたに示します
わたしの詩が表すよりもずっとずっと多くのものを。

Alack! what poverty my Muse brings forth,
That having such a scope to show her pride,
The argument all bare is of more worth
Than when it hath my added praise beside!
O! blame me not, if I no more can write!
Look in your glass, and there appears a face
That over-goes my blunt invention quite,
Dulling my lines, and doing me disgrace.
Were it not sinful then, striving to mend,
To mar the subject that before was well?
For to no other pass my verses tend
Than of your graces and your gifts to tell;
And more, much more, than in my verse can sit,
Your own glass shows you when you look in it.
