昔は、黒は美しいとはされなかった
あるいは仮に黒が美しかったとしても美という名前は持たなかった
だが今では黒は美の跡継ぎだ
そして美は私生児という呼ばれ方で貶められている、
なぜなら人はみなそれぞれに自然の女神の力を手に入れて
化粧を施した偽りの借り物の顔によって醜さを美化してしまったので
今や愛らしい美は名前も聖なる私室も持たず
辱められることはないにしても神聖さを汚されているからだ、
それゆえわたしの恋人の目は鴉のように黒い
その目は今の時代に合っている そしてその目は 醜く生まれて美しさを欠き
偽りの粧いにより自然の美を貶める者たちを嘆いているように見える
その目はそんなにもその悲痛を表現するのにふさわしいので
美というものはそんなふうに見えるべきだとだれもが言うのだ。

For since each hand hath put on Nature's power,
Fairing the foul with Art's false borrowed face,
Sweet beauty hath no name, no holy bower,
But is profaned, if not lives in disgrace.
Therefore my mistress' eyes are raven black,
Her eyes so suited, and they mourners seem
At such who, not born fair, no beauty lack,
Sland'ring creation with a false esteem:
Yet so they mourn becoming of their woe,
That every tongue says beauty should look so.
